Good morning!

How is your week going?

We are very busy here.

An initiative like Campos del Abuelo involves a lot of effort, but it is a very rewarding job.

It's a feeling that is hard to explain, as we have always depended on large supermarkets.

That's why, thanks to our online sales, where we deliver everything directly to you, rural life, natural fruits and vegetables, with authentic flavor and real shapes, can reach your home.

And this is not only a benefit for you, who consume healthy and real products, but also for us, the farmers. It transforms not only your life, but also ours 🌱.

Back to work. It's not just about being in the field tending to my crops, but also traveling miles to harvest the crops of my fellow farmers... And now, after the rain, to see how everything is going in the fields.

We've had some situations that I'll tell you about later, but everything is still going well.

I am particularly happy to be harvesting the oranges from my plots. They are as delicious and juicy as ever 🍊

And well, in addition, together with the team, we work on assembling each box to send it to each customer.

Montando cajas

The truth is, we don't stop for a second.

Well, but today I'm going to tell you about clones 😳, yes, just as you read it.

Within the vast world of agriculture, we have different ways of cultivating. Some fruits and vegetables are planted in ridges, others are trellised, and others grow on trees.

Speaking of ridges, some time ago we uploaded an article to our blog about the use of ridges, and it's very interesting. There I explain what they are and what they are for.

But wait, before that, we need to talk about clones.

As I was saying, fruits and vegetables grow in different ways, and in the case of avocados, they come from trees, which is what Salvador, an avocado grower, clones.

With this process I'm about to tell you, he achieves strong, resistant trees and high-quality fruits 🥑.

Aguacate Bacon

Salvador told me that he grows avocado trees in two ways: conventionally, with seeds 🌱 and, the other way, through clones, which is the method he uses most and about which I am going to tell you.

This cloning technique is widely used in agriculture and is performed through grafting.

Grafting is basically joining two plants into one so that they can collaborate with each other. Grafting is done with avocados, as well as with oranges, cherries, apples and other trees.

To understand what joining through grafting means, the example that never fails is the orange trees 🍊 in the streets of Valencia. If you pick one of those oranges and eat it, it will taste bitter.

This is because they come from a tree called a "rootstock" or "wild" tree. And what is done is to graft them with a variety, for example Navelina (the one we have available now!), so that the fruits have certain characteristics.

To give an example with an avocado, the Bacon variety has its own characteristics: high creaminess, very similar to butter, and it's the avocado with the least fat content.

Well, let's get back to Salvador and his clones.

This process has three steps, and two of them involve grafting:

Step 1️⃣ he plants the seed and cares for it until it sprouts.

Step 2️⃣ once the small tree has emerged, he grafts it with a variety of the rootstock or standard tree.

Step 3️⃣ then another graft is performed, but this time with an avocado variety, which can be Bacon, Hass, or whatever he desires.

Thus, by grafting the small tree twice, he manages to combine the strength of the rootstock or standard tree with the characteristics of the variety. And he manages to have a super little tree through cloning 🤯.

Very interesting, isn't it?

We've reached the end for today, but if you want to read more about the countryside, here's the article about ridges

Remember, you can visit our online store to see this season's products.

Don't forget that the queen of our plots, the orange, is also available now.

And of course, now that you know a little more about its origin, Salvador's Bacon avocado.

Next week we'll continue with news from the Spanish countryside!

A big hug!
