Hello there!
How was the end of August?
Many are almost back to work.
As for us, you already know that this is the busiest time in the fields, when we prepare for the next season (we're back in September!)
Even so, we also appreciate a good rest.
Especially after a long day of work under the sun.
It turns out that with the earth, the story is not so different...

Let me tell you.

After sowing, the plant grows, and we harvest it. But the soil, just like us, needs to rest.

And this is exactly how it is. We leave spaces uncultivated for a while, usually after the harvest and before sowing again.

This technique, called fallowing, is effective because it allows the soil to regenerate its components, unwanted guests disappear, and it naturally regains its properties.
Because as we said at the beginning: it is a living being, and it must be treated as such 🌱

Clara and Lola, fellow farmers from Campos del Abuelo, use this and other organic methods to cultivate on their farm in Xàtiva.

Chatting with Clara on her farm, we discussed the importance of letting the land rest. Because if we don't fallow or rest the land, what happens is that we end up depleting the soil.

The soil ends up depleted when what it is capable of giving is abused when it is ravaged. Let's say it's when it ends up giving more than it has and is completely exhausted.

That's why, like us, it needs to rest before going back to work.

So now you know, Valentina, listen to the wisdom of the earth and, if you are exhausted, rest.

Nothing better than returning later with renewed energy! 💪

Returning to the crops on Clara and Lola's farm, another method they use has to do with crop association.
This involves associating different plants of different species for mutual benefit in their growth. These benefits range from nutrient absorption, pest control, and even achieving a better flavor.

Another thing that we should also see and, perhaps, imitate from nature: associating for mutual benefits in a supportive way.

At Campos del Abuelo, this is one of our premises: meeting with other farmers to move forward together 😉
We are still preparing here, like the earth, to return next week with full energy...
Take care in the heat and see you next time!
